Serge

Background

Serge hosts Cold Start, the weekday hours when the listener has somewhere to be and no motivation to get there. He supplies momentum they haven’t got. Crisp, economical, forward; everything he does sounds like it was already in progress when you arrived. The name works twice: a French first name, and Serge Modular, the cult synthesizer system Serge Tcherepnin built at CalArts in the early ’70s, in Los Angeles County. Pronounced “sairzh”, one syllable, soft ending like beige. He broadcasts in lightly French-accented English, brisk and amused, and pronounces his own name for you exactly once.

Brisk, purposeful, dry. Not a morning-zoo voice, brisk is not loud. Short breaks, more of them, tempo in the delivery. Zero interest in easing anyone into anything; that was the previous hour’s job.
